CT Electrathon Puts Students to the Test at Lime Rock Park
As its sixth year running at Lime Rock Park, the CT Electrathon, an endurance challenge of novice, classic, and composite electric vehicles, put students education to practical use. On Friday 27 October, regional high school students invaded Lime Rock Park as they tested their knowledge and skill in all aspects of engineering and design.
“This [CT Electrathon] is not a race. It’s a challenge. Students have one hour to get in as many laps as possible off of one electric charge, with one change in driver,” said Laura Baker, CCSU Event Coordinator. “It’s a great opportunity for the students to actually apply what they are learning in class.”
More than just a challenging pursuit, the Electrathon program has a purpose and a mission. As Mike Greloa, State Coordinator and Consultant, defines it, “This program takes the engineering, math, and science that is learned in the classroom and makes it a fun reality. Seeing is believing, and there is a spot for everyone whether they’re into computer technology, fabrication and design, or building.”
With the program’s growing awareness, Lime Rock Park is pleased to offer a challenging course for these students year after year. “Lime Rock Park’s upper autocross is the perfect course for establishing endurance and teaching them real life driving. There’s a strategy in using the electricity efficiently and you don’t get that on an oval course,” expressed Mike Greloa.
Friday’s event was a chance for teams to assess their status, a prelude to the final spring race that will also be held at Lime Rock Park.
